Dynasty Debate: CJ Stroud vs Justin Herbert

As the 2024 offseason kicks off many of us dynasty managers look to retool our rosters. As we retool, we often ponder which players should be prioritized over another. To help you all, I will make cases for and against similarly ranked players. Kicking things off, I will look at two young promising QBs. Which QB would you rather have on your dynasty roster, CJ Stroud or Justin Herbert?

CJ Stroud, HOU QB

Wow! What an incredible start to the rookies career. Quickly destroying the theory that QBs from Ohio State can’t succeed in the NFL. Stroud’s success has jumpstarted the Texans rebuild, taking them from having the #2 overall pick in 2022 to AFC South champions in 2023. Throwing for over 4k yards, 23 TDs, and just 5 interceptions, Stroud quite easily just completed one of the best rookie season we have seen since….well…Justin Herbert. Stroud has played with the poise of a 10 year veteran and has looked nearly unstoppable at times this season.

The Texans look to be a team on the rise and offensive playmakers should view Houston as a favorable destination. They also currently have eight picks in the 2024 draft and could look to acquire more weapons for Stroud in the draft.

Justin Herbert, LAC QB

The soon to be 26 year old QB has had a rough go since his phenomenal rookie season. He is an elite talent, but has been a victim of either poor coaching or injuries around him. Coming off a career year with 477 completions and pairing with new OC Kellen Moore made Herbert a preseason MVP favorite. Unfortunately things were not going as many fans hoped for and an injury to his index finger cut Herbert’s 2023 season short. After 13 games he had over 3,100 yards with 20 TDs and 7 interceptions.

The Chargers face an offseason filled with questions. They finally fired Brandon Staley and should look to replace him with a HC that caters to the young QB, but now there uncertainty with the playmakers that surround Herbert. Austin Ekeler appears to have played his last game with the Chargers and salary cap issues plagued the team making it difficult to see both Keenan Allen and Mike Williams in a Chargers uniform next season.

CONCLUSION

I would be completely happy to have either QB on my dynasty roster. Loaded with upside, each QB gives fantasy managers a lot to be excited about. As is stands right now Herbert is ranked higher (QB5) than CJ Stroud (QB7) by many dynasty football ranking sites, but I expect them to flip in the off season. Stroud is likely bordering untouchable status in Superflex leagues, while the questions surrounding Herbert could make him a screaming buy as managers panic about a decline. I for one am higher on Stroud (My QB3) than I am Herbert(My QB6), but I do not have a large gap between these two and would let the price to obtain control my decision. If I am a Stroud owner, I would jump all over being able to potentially move Stroud for Herbert and a second round rookie pick.
