Can the Broncos beat the Pack?

Hello Broncos Country. As I sit here pondering the Broncos’ future, I realize how strange things are around the league. When you think about it, it’s as if we’re living in biblical times. The Detroit Lions are 5-1. The Patriots are no longer feared by anyone. The Browns beat the 49ers last week. The Jets beat the Eagles. Real, “Wrath of God” type stuff. Cats and dogs living together! Mass hysteria! The Rapture is near! I kid. There are many theories on how to move forward for the Broncos but, here we are.

Before we all head out to Dove Valley with pitchforks and lanterns, we have to understand that we’re in this for the long (longer) haul. Sean Payton will be allowed another two or three years to apply his structure to the program and bring in players and staff that fit his ideals. This can be a painful process and he’s not off to a great start. More on players and staff later.

The Green Bay Packers have had only 4 starting QBs in the last 31 years. Majkowski, Favre, Rodgers and now, Jordan Love. The Pack are 2-3 and Love is not performing nearly as well as Aaron Rodgers did in his first season as a full-time starter. Although the Packers are only gaining just over 81 YPG on the ground, they have two very good RBs in Aaron Jones and A.J. Dillon. WR Romeo Doubs leads the team in catches and Christian Watson can rip the top off any defense. Their defense is middle of the pack overall but they’re allowing 143.4 YPG on the ground. It’s obvious that the Broncos should exploit that.

It’s hard for fans to understand how rebuilding a football team will come about. Especially when the coaches and staff will not just come out and say, “We’re rebuilding”. You can see the writing on the wall for players like Jerry Juedy. It is what it is. So, as I see it, many of the current players and staff will not be in Denver next season. I expect players to be traded away prior to the NFLs October 31st trade deadline. Players like Justin Simmons, Josey Jewell and even Patrick Surtain II could be playing for other teams. With regards to staff, I think, at a minimum, GM George Paton and DC Vance Joseph should be let go. Sean Payton is always the smartest guy in the room. Just ask him. Sporting a gargantuan ego is his motif. Again, he’ll be allowed to build his program for at least another season. I wonder if his ego will continue to hinder the process.

At this point, there are two games that I think are “winnable” for the Broncos. In my opinion today’s game meets the criteria. The other could be an early Christmas present when they face the ailing Patriots on Christmas eve. I observed some different alignments when the Broncos were in base defense last week. As a result, they performed better. This past week, Sean Payton vowed to basically restart the program on offense. Players like RB Jaleel McLaughlin that are productive early in games have typically disappear late. I say let the young kids play. Trade the ones who aren’t bought in. Broncos squeak out a win today. 27-24.
