Fantasy Football: Sam LaPorta! Is this for real?!

Rookie Tight Ends regularly struggle to make an impact right away. The transition from college to the NFL is one that has proven to be difficult. It is not often that a rookie defies that and starts their professional career with a bang, but the Detroit Lions 2nd round selection from Tight End U has done just that. The former Hawkeye is on pace to have 85 catches, 915 yards, and 10 TDs. That would break Keith Jacksons catch record of 81 and be just shy of breaking Mike Diktas 1076 yards and 12 TDs. Regardless of position, LaPorta may break some Lions rookie records. Amon-Ra St. Brown holds the Lions record for catches (90) and yards (921), while former Lion Roy Williams hold the touchdown record (8).

LaPorta has inserted himself as the number 2 passing option in the Lions offense and I do not see that changing with the return of Jameson Williams. LaPorta’s savvy route running, great hands, and YAC ability will keep the rookie involved in the Lions play calling, while his blocking will keep in on the field as much as possible.

Moving forward LaPorta is at minimum a top 5 TE option and I believe that will continue for the rest of the year and for years to come. He is a strong buy in dynasty leagues and a piece that can give you a push to the playoffs in your redraft leagues.
