Commanders @ Broncos. A Broncos fan perspective.

Hello Broncos Country. It’s that time of year. Broncos fans are filled with hope and the promise of turning over a new leaf of success. Ah, yes. A new leaf. Well, as usual, Johnny Raincloud is here to put things into perspective. After losing to the raiders, (intentionally not capitalized) the promise of making the playoffs or, even being competitive inside the AFC West is bleak. A brief review of the current Broncos’ roster reveals one glaring deficiency to me. The Broncos don’t have any “Dogs” on the roster. Zero. You know, the Aqib Talib types that will get in your face and back it up with great play. Derek Wolfe. Shannon Sharpe. Those guys. The Colorado Buffaloes get it. They don’t have team captains with a “C” on their jerseys. No. Those players get a ”D”, for dog or an “L”, for leader, on their jerseys. The Broncos are bereft of these types of individuals. You can’t teach it or coach it. They’re born with it.

Many arguments were spawned as to why the Broncos lost last week. I’m here to tell you that it was, as usual, a calamity of errors. The kicker, Damarri Mathis, lack of pass rush, abandoning the run etc… The result was very familiar. Now, a team that feels like they are on the right track comes to town. The Washinton Commanders. A team that the Broncos should beat but I have my doubts.

Commanders Head Coach Ron Rivera enters his fourth year as HC. He’s surrounded himself with familiar names in OC Eric Bieniemy and DC Jack Del Rio. QB Sam Howell is making just his second start in the NFL. He’s a gunslinger and likes to play off script. Something that could get him in turnover trouble but he could also make some big plays. RBs Brian Robinson Jr. and Antonio Gibson are both big, bruising backs. Both are over 6’ tall and both weigh more than 220. WR Terry McLaurin leads the room with fellow WR Jahan Dotson who is a speed merchant, can rip the top off the defense. Washington has been very good defensively and they are lauding the return of DE Chase Young. The Broncos lead the all-time series at 8-6.

WR Jerry Juedy returns for the Broncos and hopes are that he adds the needed spark to the Broncos passing game. Russell Wilson played better last week although the offense in general looked somewhat vanilla. With the return of Juedy, I would expect Sean Payton to open up the offense a bit and perhaps stretch the field a little more often. Fifty more rush yards last week would likely have equaled a win. They brought in run blocking aces Ben Powers and Mike McGlinchey. Paid them a lot of money. I say make them earn it. Although the Broncos are at home, I don’t see them winning this game. Yes, the Raincloud is looming once again. Maybe with some rainbows and unicorns they can squeak out the W. I say Commanders win 23-20.
