Pro Football Debate 2023 NFL MVP Future

By Brian Bjornholm II

The 2023 NFL Draft is winding down and it’s never too early to start looking ahead at some future prop plays. If you tailed my Draft picks then congrats! We managed to go up +1.25 units only missing the longshot play on Bijan. I believe in starts, and few things are better than starting the 2023 season off already in the black.

The last few days of the draft have been fun, surprising, and chaotic. With tons of moves from around the league, some of them questionable at the time, I just want to give my condolences to your mock draft. With that said, let’s get right into our pick for 2023 NFL Most Valuable Player!

Justin Herbert (Los Angeles Chargers) +1000

This play just screams value to me. I could have made this easy and said flip coins for your Mahomes, Burrow, or Allen pick, but I think Justin Herbert can take a major leap forward this season.

Last year Herbert threw for the 2nd most yards in the league with 4,739, a 68.2% completion rate and a 93.2% overall qb rating. 2022 was a step in the right direction and thanks to some front office moves this off-season, I’d like Justin to have an MVP year. The Chargers moved on from Joe Lombardi and have hired Kellen Moore to step into the OC role. Moore should be the catalyst to get the most out of Herbert this season. Justin threw the ball over 65% of the time last year, 2nd most in the NFL and without Jerry Jones making sure Zeke earns a paycheck, I love Moores ability to get creative with the playbook while keeping Herbert busy each week.

At the receiver position, Keenan Allen and Mike Williams were injured last season and saw limited action on and off all year. To help get some more offensive weapons, the Chargers went out and drafted Quentin Johnston from TCU with the 21st pick in the 1st round. I think this receiving core has more than enough talent to help Herbert stretch the field and surpass the 5,000 yard mark.

Looking ahead at the Chargers schedule, the pass defenses they seem to be lining up against should be weak enough for Justin to pile up a ton of touchdowns and help them compete for an AFC west title.

What really has me excited about this play is the potential value of catching it live. While I still really like this at 10-1, if you like to gamble, this play can become more attractive. The only proven system year after year in NFL handicapping is to fade the public. There is no doubt the betting public will have eyes all over the usual suspects week 1. If the Chargers lose or Herbert starts slow, this can be a great play to jump on Monday morning.

Remember, these are the plays we like. Fade or tail as you see fit, stick within your units, and as always this is not financial advice.
